As the clocks go back, the nights draw in and the temperature drops, the temptation to stay indoors becomes greater – But there is no reason why you can’t still enjoy the British countryside and the benefits of Nordic Walking. There’s an old saying “there is no such thing as bad weather just bad clothing” so with that in mind, here are some tips on staying safe this winter.
So, make sure you are dressed for the occasion. Following our tips will help ensure you stay safe, and while we can’t guarantee you the snow that the title conjures up (UK snow is so unpredictable!!), if you dress well and stay safe, we guarantee you can enjoy the health benefits of Nordic walking all year round.
Layer Up
Now is the time to make sure your clothing can withstand the weathers. You may have spent the last few months in nothing more than a t-shirt and shorts but now is the time to layer up. Your temperature may cool down with the night air and then heat up as you get walking and swinging those arms, so it’s essential to have layers you can put on or take off easily.
A good base layer will be breathable and dry quickly – fabrics that don’t dry easily will keep you wet and cold so avoid cotton and choose wool or synthetic materials such as polyester or polypropylene.
A good lightweight waterproof jacket will keep you dry from the elements, have a look at our range of Nordic Walking clothing here. Or alternatively pop into your local Cotswold outdoors or Rohan store who are happy to help provide advice on the best clothing for you, and best of all you can also use your Nordic Walking discount card for 10% off.
If your walking shoes haven’t been subject to much rain recently, now may be the time to check their waterproofing. If they are no good, invest in a new pair or revamp the old with a waterproofing spray – cold and wet feet are not funny and apart from being uncomfortable can lead to blistering and in severe conditions – frostbite. A good pair of Goretex paired with proper walking socks will make sure you are still enjoying your walking safely in all weathers – head over to our shop to see the range we offer or again visit your local outdoor shop for advice with fitting. If waterproof shoes are not in your price range why not try Sealskinz waterproof socks instead!
Light Up The Night like a Firework
Unless you eat your carrots and can see in the dark, night lights are absolutely essential for safety – these Silva Tyto Safety Lights can be attached anywhere on your headband, backpack or jacket.
If you like to really stand out in the dark, some pole lights and flashing paws may be more your thing. Not only will they ensure you are seen, these LESU Cross Terrain Paws with LED lights are incredibly practical on every terrain and have been tested extensively by Nordic Walkers. Coming in four different colours, they magically light up on contact with the ground ensuring you stand out from the crowd. Match them up with these Gabel pole lights and not only will you light up the night, you will ensure you are spotted crossing those fields or dark country roads.
