Trainee NWUK Instructor Tony Dunne is walking proof that exercising in the great outdoors is a fantastic way to combat depression.
Tony from Felixstowe in Suffolk suffered depression, anxiety and panic attacks so bad at times that he couldn’t leave the house but with the help he received from Colchester MIND and the discovery of Nordic walking he now has a really positive outlook on life!
Tony Says ” I have just completed my fund raising for the London 2 Brighton 100k challenge that I Nordic Walked on the 25th-26th May 2013 I didn’t break any records at 28hours and 49 minutes completion time but it was a fantastic personal achievement. I now have good Mental and Physical health and I know how important the help and support of others is to a life of wellbeing”
Well done Tony!
Here are some facts about EXERCISE & DEPRESSION
Exercise has long been a proven way to enhance mood due to the fact that your body releases natural chemicals that improve your mood and make you feel happier when you are active.
Taking part in physical activities also offers many opportunities. It’s a great way to meet people for instance and nordic walking is usually a very sociable activity because you can chat as you walk!
The fresh air and vitamin D also make you feel good and it’s so good to take yourself away from your daily routine sometimes. Just a hour in great company and a lovely place can do the trick.
Exercise and physical activity can provide something worthwhile in your life. Something that you really enjoy, that gives you a goal to aim for and a sense of purpose.
