Back in deepest darkest February, we set a challange to our instructors, groups and members to see just how many miles they actually Nordic Walked.Using an amazing FREE mobile phone APP we challenged them to see how many miles they could clock up before the start of the London 2012 Olympics.  We were astonished with the results!…

Using our favourite mobile phone app Endomondo, we encouraged you to sign up for various challenges, to pit yourself against others and most importantly yourself.  Once the app is downloaded, you enter your vital statistics, select the ‘fitness walking’ mode and simply hit go at the start of your walk.  Once you have finished, you can view your route, speed, calorie burn, distance – even your altitude gain.

Here are the results of our 2012 Challenge

Stewart with his new Gabel Inverso Alu poles

CHALLENGE: MOST MILES NORDIC WALKED

1st – 889.51 miles Stewart Macfarlane.  Stewart owes his remarkable distance to walking to and from work and making the most of his weekends taking in the local walks and surroundings.  We were delighted to send him a shiny new pair of poles in recognition of this outstanding achievement. Read about how Stuart, a formerly unfit smoker, achieved his amazing total here.

2nd – 545.45 miles Ian Phillip Watson

3rd – 333.23 miles Marek Szuster

MOST ACTIVE MINUTES (before the Olympics):

1st – 256 hours Stewart Macfarlane.  Unsuprisingly, it takes an awfully long time to walk almost 900 miles and averages a good pace of roughly 3.47MPH

2nd – 209 hours Mt Nordic instructors Tug and Bibi Wilson, who run regular walking groups and fitness sessions each week.

3rd – 136 hours Northants Nordic Walking instructor Aly Taylor, who also runs regular walks and sessions in leafy Northamptonshire.

TEAM CHALLENGE: Walk 2012 miles before the start of the Olympics

We set our instructors a fairly ambitious target to walk over 2012 miles collectively…. But we smashed it.  In fact, between the 10-15 NWUK instructors who joined the challenge, the distance was covered by late June, a full 27 days before the deadline.  It just goes to show just how much dedication some people put into their Nordic Walking and we salute you!!

A big THANK YOU for joining in the spirit of these fun challenges and we hope you join in the next lot very soon………
